Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can donate blood? +

Most healthy adults aged 17–65, weighing at least 50kg, can donate. You should be free of infections, not be on certain medications, and feel well on the day of donation. Our registration form walks you through the basic eligibility checklist.

How often can I donate? +

Whole blood donors are generally advised to wait at least 90 days (about 3 months) between donations. Your BDSP dashboard tracks your next-eligible date automatically once you log a donation.

Is donating blood safe? +

Yes. Donation uses sterile, single-use equipment, and takes about 10–15 minutes. Most people feel completely normal afterward with some rest and hydration.

Is there a cost to request blood? +

No. BDSP does not charge patients, families, or hospitals to search our donor network or post a request. We are a volunteer, non-profit society.

How is my information used? +

Your contact details are only shown to patients or hospitals when there is a genuine blood group and location match, or when you choose to mark yourself available. You can update your availability or details anytime from your dashboard.

What if I can't find a match on the site? +

Submit a blood request — our team and wider volunteer network can help beyond what shows up in an automated search, especially for urgent or rare blood groups.

How do I know my blood group if I've never checked? +

Most hospitals and diagnostic labs can test it in a few minutes for a small fee. Once you know it, add it to your BDSP profile so you can be matched with requests near you.

What should I do before donating? +

Eat a proper meal, drink plenty of water, and get a good night's sleep beforehand. Avoid donating on an empty stomach or right after strenuous exercise.

Can I donate if I recently recovered from an illness? +

It depends on the illness and how recently you recovered — some conditions require a short waiting period. When in doubt, mention it to the screening staff at the donation camp; they'll make the call on the day.

How can I volunteer without donating blood myself? +

Plenty of our work — organising camps, spreading awareness in colleges, managing logistics — doesn't require you to donate. Visit our Volunteer page to see current opportunities.

Does BDSP operate outside Islamabad? +

Our core team is based in Islamabad, but our donor network and volunteer base span multiple cities across Pakistan. Search by city on the Find Donor page to see who's active near you.
